PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Fellow Residents. It’s spring again. We had a long, hard winter and now we have a new crop of potholes. We are having pretty good luck with the new mayor in getting neighborhood problems addressed. I don’t know how long it will last. If you see a pavement problem, please contact the Department of Public Works at 327-4622 and get a case number. If you have a storm drain in or near your property, please clean it out. Thanks to all of you who have already paid your dues for 2008. Sincerely, Steve

BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS

In spite of the weather, we will try to continue our program of promoting the beautification of our neighborhoods through out annual Beautification Awards for our Members.

ZONING VIOLATIONS

We thought we had a victory in shutting down the commercial tree-trimming business which occupied the old O. Henry property. However, we were surprised to see it moved into our backyards at 8100 Meridian, between West Hill Valley Drive and Hargeo Lane. This relocation has been reported and inspected by the new Mayor’s assistant for neighborhood relations. Expedited action by code enforcement has been requested by that office. The new chief of the Mayor’s Action Center came to our March Board meeting and assured us of their commitment to prompt attention to neighborhood problems. This will be a good test of that commitment. Among ourselves, we need to be sensitive to the looks of our neighborhood. Parking of semi-tractors and other commercial trucks is not permitted in residential neighborhoods. Enforcement has been light in the past but we hope that the new leadership will correct that situation.

CRIME WATCH NEWS

Neighborhood crime including vandalism, home and property invasions, thefts, and property damage are county-wide problems which Hill Valley Estates residents have not escaped. The HVHA Board has agreed to cooperate with association members and residents who are interested in revitalizing the Crime Watch program. The Crime Watch program shows residents how to be vigilant in observing occurrences in their neighborhood and how to report out of place events to the Crime Watch coordinator or the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department

To revitalize Crime Watch will require a sufficient number of residents willing to volunteer to be an active part of it. You need not be a member of HVHA to help; any resident of the Hill Valley area qualifies. If enough positive responses are received by May 31, 2008 the Board will work with the volunteer leaders to re-start the program. Contact the association by e-mail at hvhoa@hillvalley.org or call Paulette Clay, Board liaison for Crime Watch, at 889-3506, to volunteer. Are you already on the phone or at your PC?

ALERTS

IPL Tree Trimming – The Indianapolis Power & Light Company has a three-year cycle of trimming tree limbs away from the power lines. This summer the IPL will be trimming in East Hill Valley and West Hill Valley south of Buffalo Drive/Mellowood. They will notify you by mail at least twice.

Help for Seniors and Handicapped – Many of our neighbors are getting up in years and have difficulty with household chores such as lawn care, cleaning gutters, light housekeeping, etc. This is an opportunity for service projects for youth groups, church groups and caring individuals. The HVHA Board is willing to try to coordinate the service need of our residents with such groups. If you need help or your group is willing to help, please contact a Board member from the list on this newsletter.

Medical Equipment and Power Outages – When there is a power outage and you have electrical medical equipment which is critical to your health, please advise IPL immediately. They will place a priority on restoring power in your area.

Postage Rates Change – First class postage goes up a penny to 42 cents on May 12, 2008. Forever Stamps are still good at that rate. Post cards rates also go up to 27 cents.
