BOARD MESSAGE
Happy New Year from your Board! We hope you all had a delightful holiday – Christmas, Chanukah or Kwanza – and are off to a joyful 2006. We again invite you to join the Hill Valley Homeowners Association for the new year. Among voluntary homeowners’ associations we are highly respected as the largest in Central Indiana and one of the most effective. We will continue to refine the thoroughness and convenience of snow removal and ask your cooperation in two ways: first, please park your vehicles off the street when a snowfall of 2 or more inches is forecast; and, second, let us know as soon as possible if there is any problem with the service we are receiving from our contractors. Contact the Smiths, 865-7761 or the Scheidlers, 881-1558. We hope you stay healthy and happy all through this coming year.
SNOW REMOVAL
Snow removal in December was fairly smooth in East Hill Valley but in the West there was an unexpected problem. Our contractor’s crews were asked to leave the neighborhood by a crew who represented themselves as working for the city of Indianapolis. They were contracted by the city but only to clear a single emergency route in each direction and were supposed to leave the neighborhood if private contractors were there. The head of snow removal services for Indianapolis apologized and will try to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Our contractor promptly returned to finish the job when we found out what happened.
2006 EVENTS CALENDAR
Newsletters will be sent out during first or second week of January, April, July, and October. Any news must be submitted before the end of previous month.

The Board meets the 3rd Monday of every month (except December) generally at St. Barnabas church at 7:30 p.m. The first 20 minutes are devoted to input from visitors before the business meeting continues. Please be prepared, as there is limited time. Dates for 2006 are as follows:

BOARD NEWS
Please welcome two of our members to the Board - Billie Moore and Paulette Clay. Their street locations and telephone numbers are listed at the end of this Newsletter. Please keep the Board Secretary, Ernestine Nicholson, in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers from heart surgery. She is doing well in recovery. Also keep Dorothy and Steve Scheidler in your prayers for traveling mercies as they return on the long drive home from Florida. Because of illness and absences, the January Board Meeting is cancelled.
SEASONAL VANDALISM
Unfortunately there are some individuals who delight in vandalizing our yards and homes. We have had a number of "yard jobs" by 4-wheel drive vehicles, usually at night. We have had Christmas decorations stolen, slashed and destroyed. We will never understand why these demented persons find a twisted kind of joy in causing misery and heartache for others. If you have any information that could lead to the prosecution of these blatant criminals, contact one of the Board members. Please do not try to excuse them because of their age.
AREA BEAUTIFICATION
This year the HVHA Board will have its first flower and "lawnscaping" contest for our members, complementing our Christmas Decorations Contest, as a way to continue promoting the beautification of our neighborhoods. We hope to make this an annual event in the following format:
Spring – The focus will be on bulb flowers and early-blooming shrubs and trees, along with your evergreens. Judging will be in late April or early May. We will announce all dates in the April newsletter.
Summer – The focus will be on summer flowers and shrubs. Judging will be late June or early July.
Fall – The focus will be on your prized maples, oaks and sweet gum trees, autumn flowers and shrubs. Judging will be in late September or early October.
Board members will act as judges and will be looking for overall "eye appeal" for each season so any member’s lawnscape can win. If you have one of those nice back yard gardens you’d like to show us, contact a board member so we know to visit you. All suggestions are welcome.
First, second and third prizes will be awarded for East and West Hill Valley for each of the three seasons. Winners will be publicly recognized and receive prizes similar to the Decorations Contest.
INFORMATION FOR NEW RESIDENTS OF HILL VALLEY
There are 1100 homes in Hill Valley. We have grown together over the many years to support a Homeowners Association with a Board of Directors. Joining is only $25. per year and that includes the cost of snow plowing. We publish a quarterly Newsletter to inform everyone what¹s coming up next including zoning bulletins. We have an annual picnic which is open to all members of the Hill Valley Homeowners Assn. and includes a full meal, recreation for the children, and dancing for the adults. We have a website, www.hillvalley.org, where you can find our mission statement, a map of the whole neighborhood, a list of all board members, a monthly calendar, special events and announcements, past Newsletters, and important area phone numbers.
STREET MAINTENANCE
Potholes are becoming a menace to our tires. Please report them to the Mayor’s Action Line: 327-4622. Do your part if you have a storm drain in front of your property by keeping it clear of leaves and debris. Be sure to get an Action Number for follow up.
TAX SEASON ISSUES
Taxpayers age 65 and older should not overlook the Indiana Unified Credit for the Elderly. If you have less than $10,000 in income over and above Social Security, you should be eligible for this refund.
Taxpayers with dependent children should be aware of a new, uniform definition of a qualifying child for all child-related credits and exemptions.
MEMBERS SERVING MEMBERS
If you have a specialty or talent that you would want your neighborhood to know about, we will be glad to list your name, address, contact information and a description in 12 words or less of your business or craft. There will be no charge but no special wording or art treatment. This is information, not advertising, and a service to all members.
