It’s Annual Meeting Time Again! Monday, October 19th

All members are welcome. This year we will elect the Board Members for the next two years and will hear from our Neighborhood Liaison from the Mayor’s Office, Gary Loveless.

Begins at 7 p.m. at Frieden’s Church. Please come and share your thoughts about Hill Valley.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Fellow Residents.

It is high heat time of the year. Stay cool and get your travels in order to see the world. If you haven’t paid your dues yet please pay up so we can have a nice picnic again. Tell your neighbors also. It is election year so if any of you are interested in being on the board let us know. Easy job not much pay. Sincerely, Steve

Honorable mentions are listed on our web site – www.hillvalley.org . We hope the weather will let us have a fall flower and foliage period as well.

NEIGHBORHOOD ALERTS

New Stop Sign – Watch out for the new 4-way stop at Royal Meadow and Meadowridge Lane!

Sewer Survey – The city will be running robotic cameras through the sanitary sewers to see if anyone has downspouts or other illegal connections into that sewer system. Violators will be forced to remove the connections. This survey may include both East and West Hill Valley.

Zoning Violations – Parking of commercial trailers and trucks overnight and on weekends is illegal and is being reported to the new Division of Code Enforcement. This type of parking is discourteous to your neighbors and decreases the property values of the whole neighborhood.

ANNUAL DUES

During the past two years the few snows we gave had have been enormous and plowing the neighborhood streets has depleted our funds to the point that we may not be able to cover two such snows in one season. To insure that your association stays financially solvent, the Board has reluctantly agreed to raise the dues to $30 per year. This is the first increase in over a decade so we hope you will not be too upset.

NEW USE OF 911

In our community meetings with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department we have been advised that all calls about suspicious activity, traffic or safety problems, or emergencies can be made to 911. It no longer is confined to life-threatening emergencies or criminal behavior in progress.

NEIGHBORHOOD AWARENESS NETWORK

The Board has started a new program to try to deter crimes from happening in our neighborhood and to promote our neighbors- helping-neighbors efforts.

There are some things we can do daily as individual households:

But there is so much more we can do if we come together and get the word out to make a safer and better neighborhood for us all. In conjunction with the safety aspects of this program, we would like to be able to help neighbors in need of assistance with yard work, running errands, and checking on the sick or elderly members of our blocks. Do you know of someone on your street or block that can help us launch our new program by being a Neighborhood Awareness Network Liaison?

We cannot do it without your support. Please consider what role you can play in our NAN – Neighborhood Awareness Network and contact Paulette Clay. Call her at 889-3506 or send an e-mail to: paulette.clay@att.net

OUTBUILDINGS

We receive requests about what outbuildings are permitted in Hill Valley. The city code requires all outbuildings to conform to the setback lines that are recorded in each deed and should not be positioned on any easement that has been established by utilities or local government. In terms of size, anything over 1200 square feet (10 ft x 12 ft) must have a building permit. We hope you will be courteous to your neighbors by where you place them and keep them looking in decent shape.

2009 EVENTS CALENDAR

The Board meets the 3rd Monday of every month (except December) generally at St. Barnabas church at 7:30 p.m. The first 20 minutes are devoted to input from visitors before the business meeting continues. Please be prepared, as there is limited time. The remaining dates for 2009 are:

October 19, 2009 Annual Meeting at Frieden’s Church, 7 pm; November 16, 2009, Board Meeting

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Prize or Lottery Scams – No legitimate lottery notifies you by e-mail. No legitimate award requires you to give money up-front or asks you for your bank account, credit card or social security numbers. Some scams offer sub-standard or over-priced prizes, give you an opportunity to purchase an "exclusive offer" or may even require you to travel overseas to receive it. Do not chat or correspond with these people, hang up immediately.

Small Business Scam – Many small businesses in Indiana received a letter from the "Indiana Corporate Compliance Business Division" attempting to collect $125 or $150 to "process company annual minutes". Totally bogus! The perpetrators are being tracked down for prosecution.

High Speeds on Main Streets – Strangers may appear, attempting to reach 88 mph on our streets, trying to get back to their home time frame. They probably won’t make it since there is no clock tower. We received a note from a visitor, surprised that there was a real "Hill Valley" - not just a fantasy from "Back to the Future".

Postal Service Improvements – We have been advised that the Automated Postal Centers can accept most credit cards to pay for PO box renewals. USPS has a new discount program through Master Card for small business customers using on-line shipping.

NEWSLETTER

We would like to see our quarterly publication become more of a neighborhood newsletter, but we need your help. We would welcome suggestions, comments and other newsworthy items that you feel would be of interest to your neighbors. The HVHA does reserve the right to edit such submittals for clarity and conciseness. Please submit your articles to any HVHA board member and we will try to publish it as submitted. If we have questions or concerns we will contact the author.
